Famous “crooked house” goes on sale for £500,000

One of England’s most extraordinary houses has gone on the market with a price tag of more than £500,000.

The 600-year-old home in the centre of the historic Suffolk village of Lavenham is known locally as the “Crooked House” on account of its gravity-defying angles. It was once part of a larger property belonging to a wealthy medieval family.

The East Anglian Daily Times reports the property is Grade Two listed for its special architectural importance and is a popular subject for photographs and social media posts.

Caroline Edwards of estate agent Carter Jonas, which is selling the house, told the newspaper: “It is an extraordinary-looking property – visitors to Lavenham often can’t understand why it is still standing. But the village is full of historic timber-framed properties that have stood the test of time thanks to the skills of builders and carpenters half a millennium ago.”

Lavenham has around 300 listed buildings, including one, De Vere House, which featured in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One as the location where the young wizard was born and where his parents were slain by Lord Voldemort.
